OFFICIAL MINUTES OF DGO/SUMMER CABINET MEETING CONVENTION
Held At Enfield on July 19th, 2008
The meeting was called to order at 9:30 am by District Governor Peter Wallis with 149 Lions representing 42 Lions Club in attendance.
The Meeting opened with the singing of O’Canada, the Lions Invocation and a minute of silence in memory of deceased members of the Lions family and for World Peace.
DG Peter welcomed all Lions to the meeting and turned the floor over to DGO Chairman KL Peter Jeffery who welcomed all Lions to Enfield. He informed the Lions of the regulations concerning the fire hall and gave directions to the noon luncheon.
Voting Procedures: Constitution & By Laws Chairman PDG Charles Uhlman explained who was eligible to vote and that the yellow delegate cards would be used for today’s meeting.
Minutes of Amherst Convention: Moved by PDG Alex Hancox seconded by PCST Ken MacKenzie that the minutes of the 2007-2008 Convention in Amherst be accepted as printed in the March/ April issue of the NS Lion. Motion carried.
2007-2008 Year End Financial Report: PDG Ralph Williams presented the un-audited 2007-2008 year end financial report showing a closing balance of $17,856.76. Moved by PDG Ralph Williams seconded by Zone Chairman Peter Reid that the report be accepted as presented. Motion carried.
2008-2009 International Program: DG Peter introduced International President Albert Brandel’s program “Miracles Through Service’ to the meeting. Some of the items touched on included a yearly membership program, a new set of Excellence Awards available to Lions and a program to celebrate Lions who make a difference.
He also introduced his own program “Cruising To Serve” which will look to reduce membership losses by 25% and to increase our growth by 10%.
District Governor Peter reminded all Clubs to have any trophies and awards passed into PDG Alex Hancox as soon a possible. He needs them for the Fall Cabinet Meeting.
Introduction of Zone and Committee Chairpersons: DG Peter introduced the 2008-2009 Zone and Committee Chairpersons by having them assemble at the front of the room as he called their names and the Committees they chair.
10:15 am – Meeting recessed for break.
10:45 am – Board of Directors Seminar: District Governor Peter introduced PDG Clyde Paul who gave a very informative presentation on the responsibilities of Boards of Directors, the laws which apply to them and the penalties faced if Boards fail in these responsibilities.
12:00 Noon Luncheon – Shooters Restaurant
1:15 pm – Meeting reconvened. The afternoon session opened with the drawing of various tickets which had been sold earlier in the day.

KL Peter Jeffery announced that the Noon Luncheon Tail Twister fines in the amount of $130 would be donated to the Lions Foundation of Canada.
Committee Reports
(a)District Pins: Lion Don Poirier reported he had turned in $268.00 from pin sales to CST. He also suggested lowering prices on various pins in stock. Moved by Lion Don Poirier seconded by PDG Alex Hancox that the District 06 pin be reduced from $4.50 to $4.00, the MN 06 pin from $2.00 to $1.00 and the MD 07 pin from $3.00 to $2.00. Motion carried.
After consultation with DG Peter, Lion Don proposed a new series of District N-2 pins which would depict forts/ fortresses in Nova Scotia:
Fortress of Louisburg
Fort Ann
Citadel
York Redoubt
Moved by Lion Don Poirier seconded by PDG Earl Einarson that we proceed with creation of new pins. Motion carried.
(b)Women’s Membership Development: PDG Sharon Dykman – of the 68 Clubs in the District, only 4.9% have women in leadership roles. At the District level, that increases to 50% for women who chair Committees. She encouraged the Clubs to put more females in leadership positions.
(c)MD Convention: District Governor Peter informed the Clubs of a form which will be coming out shortly which would seek ideas on how to improve the Conventions.
(d)Peace Poster: Lion Alice Neiley reminded Clubs to order their Kits now. October 1st is deadline for ordering.
(e)Postage Stamps/ Used Eye Glasses: Zone Chairman Peter Reid reported on behalf of both Committees. Since his last reports, he has received 32,121 pairs of glasses, 13,333 lenses, 11,278 cases and 63 hearing aids from 58 Lions Clubs and 1 Lioness Club. Lion Rhonda, since her last report, has received 93,097 stamps from 21 Lions Clubs and 2 Lioness Clubs. In both cases, Clubs are reminded to clearly mark boxes with Club name.
(f)Public Relations: Lion Leonard Bugbee announced that a public Relations seminar would be held at the Fall Cabinet Meeting and asked that all Clubs send him the names & addresses of their PR Chairpersons.
(g)Sick & Visiting: KL Jan Deveaux asked that anyone knowing of a Lion in the hospital to forward their name to her as soon as possible.
(h)Lions Quest: Lion Barb Lyle reported a profit of $124.89 on ticket sales that day.
(i)District Eye Care Project: PDG Gordon Johnston presented report on behalf of PDG Evie Morin thanking the Clubs who have participated and updating them on the process of the grant application.
(j)Lions Foundation of Canada: PDG Earl Einarson updated the Clubs on recent events at the Foundation. $39,000 was presented to him at Convention in Amherst, several Walks for Dog Guides were held recently and the Foundation is in the process of expanding it’s kennels.
(k)NS Lions Foundation: Chairman Lion Jan Deveaux announced that there will be a Foundation meeting held in Shelburne at the Fall Cabinet meeting.
(l)District Golf: DG Peter reported that 47 applications had been received so far. They would like to get a minimum of 72.
(m) Fall Cabinet Meeting: Full information will be in the upcoming issue of the NS Lion.
(n)Environment: Lion Reg House – report turned in. He is waiting for info on Photo Contest, an AAH meeting is scheduled for August 19 and he will be contacting all Clubs.
(o)District Bowling: Lions Steve Craig turned in report showing 8 teams participated with Yarmouth #1 winning. Loss of $35.00 to Kingston Lions Club
(p)Diabetes Awareness: Report turned in by KL Roger Natarajan with information on Camp Lion Maxwell. He has received about $20,000 from Clubs so far.
New Business
(a)Long Range Planning: Chairman PCST Ken MacKenzie presented the following Notice of Motion:
At the Fall Cabinet Meeting being held in Shelburne, I will move or cause to be moved on behalf of the Long Range Planning Committee and the Constitution and By-Laws Committee, the following Notice of Motion:
In the Policy Manual of District N2 APPENDIX “F” – Rules Best Club Contest ITEM #2 It states “Membership list to DG by September 30th – 25 pts”
Add “Membership List also to VDG by September 30th – 25 pts”
Also under Item #2 it states “PU 101 received by May 15th – 100 pts
Change to read “PU 101 received by DG by May 15th – 100 pts”
Also add “PU 101 received by VDG by May 15th – 50 pts.

(b)M & A Reports: DG Peter, in responding to questions concerning M & A reports, talked about the difference in when International wants reports and when District needs them. He also talked about what are acceptable projects to report. If Clubs have any question, they should contact him.
Rose Bowl Count was conducted with Kingston Lions Club placing first, Enfield Elmsdale 2nd and Bridgewater 3rd.
(c)Camp Lion Maxwell: Lion Verge Huntley asked for information on Camp Lion Maxwell. August 15th is deadline for applications – Aug 27th is Lions Appreciation day.
There being no further business, DG Peter thanked the Enfield Elmsdale Lions for hosting the DGO and wished everyone a safe trip home.
